In 1991 Jim Moran Ph.D. and his colleagues from Tennessee University published an article entitled: “Creativity in Early Childhood Classrooms.” In it, they stated that, according to their research, the percentage of original responses offered by children during ‘brainstorming’ activities drops from about 50% among four-year-old’s to 25% during the primary school years.
They concluded that the structured materials used in schools, and the instructions offered by teaching staff, reduced the flexibility of children and discouraged creativity. Creative Thinking is a skill, it can be developed. A common perception is that we are born creative, not creative or somewhere in between and that is the end of the story. This is not so. It is something that we can become better at.
Creativity is developed by making connections. Unusual connections. It comes from laying aside the rules – even for just a little while – so that we are able to reach beyond logic and structure and tap into our imaginations more easily. This is the place where we store our sense of the ridiculous, our sense of being able to do the impossible and ultimately, our ability to see things differently, to find new and usable solutions.
This course will inquire into what creativity is, how we can develop it, and what the benefits of doing so are. It will challenge some of our preconceived notions of what creativity is.
Consider J. Robert Oppenheimer (creator of the atom bomb), Rik Mayall, Pele, and Tracy Emin. All of them creative, not all of them appreciated for their creativity.
The course is based upon research and thinking into creativity, for example, work and ideas of Edward De Bono are used and adapted.
By the end of the course, delegates will have
• Looked at what creativity is and how it can help them and / or their organizations
• Introduced and used simple but creative thinking methods and strategies.
This is a 10 to 12-hour course and can be done as two full days or in shorter sessions or a combination of the two. The subject material and focus will be tailored to the delegates and organizations involved.
